The Basics: Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express Review

Card provider: American Express
Cash back system: 3% cash back on U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 per year in purchases – then 1%), 2% cash back at U.S. gas stations, 2% cash back at select U.S. department stores, 1% cash back on other purchases (terms and limitations apply)

How the cash back system works

The main feature of the American Express Blue Cash Everyday rewards card is that depending on how much you spend in each category, you're going to get a percentage of that back that you can put towards your next bill.

Like we mentioned above, you earn this cash back – or Rewards Dollars as American Express likes to call it – by getting:

  • 3% cash back on U.S. supermarket purchases (up to $6,000 per year in purchases – then 1%)
  • 2% cash back on U.S. gas station purchases
  • 2% cash back on select U.S. department store purchases
  • 1% cash back on other purchases (terms and limitations apply)

But there's more to it than that, so let's dive into each category for a closer look.

3% cash back on U.S. supermarket purchases

Every time you purchase items at the grocery store – everything from the essentials like bread and eggs to those indulgent little cookies – AmEx will give you 3% cash back on your total purchase (up to $6,000 per year in purchases, after that 1%).

So by just going grocery shopping tonight and spending $50 on groceries, you'll earn a total of 1.5 Rewards Dollars. And of course, the Rewards Dollars pile up the more you spend. So if you're feeding a big family and spending $200 a week – you're going to earn your Rewards Dollars quicker. By the way – $200 a week is $6 reward dollars for purchases you were already going to make. Nice!

Some eligible supermarkets approved by American Express include:

  • ALDI
  • FreshDirect
  • Gelson's
  • Hy-Vee
  • Kings Food Markets
  • Meijer
  • ShopRite
  • Smart & Final
  • Stop & Shop
  • Trader Joe's
  • Vons
  • Whole Foods
  • Winn-Dixie

AmEx notes that this is not a complete list, and also says merchants, where you WILL NOT earn 3% on your purchase, include: convenience stores, specialty stores (like wine shops or fish markets), superstores, and warehouse clubs like Amazon, Target, Walmart, BJ's. You can find more info on the American Express website.

2% cash back on U.S. gas station purchases

Just about every household spends money on gas. Whether you're commuting, or driving kids around town – all that gas adds up. So with your Blue Cash Everyday card from American Express, you can take advantage of this essential spending by earning cash back.

American Express has approved the following gas stations (this is not a complete list):

  • Gulf
  • Murphy USA
  • Murphy Express
  • Exxon
  • Mobil
  • Hess
  • Shell

It's important to note here that like the eligible supermarkets, you cannot earn additional rewards, in this case, 2% cash back, if the gas station is also a convenience store or part of a supermarket or warehouse club like Walmart or Sam's Club.

2% cash back at select U.S. department stores

Now, this is a great feature! We all know clothing and other items bought at department stores can be necessities, such as kitchen appliances or back to school clothes. But sometimes you just want to splurge a little too, and that's okay. It's great actually – because American Express is going to give you 2% cash back on your purchases from the following popular stores:

  • Bealls
  • Belk
  • Bloomingdale's
  • Bon Ton Stores
  • Boscov's
  • Century 21 Department Stores
  • Dillard's
  • J.C. Penney (JCP)
  • Kohl's
  • Lord & Taylor
  • Macy's
  • Neiman Marcus
  • Nordstrom
  • Saks Fifth Avenue
  • Sears
  • Stein Mart

All your purchases do have to be made in the U.S. to qualify.

1% cash back on all other purchases

Last but not least, if the rest of your purchases don't fall under the categories above, you can still earn cash back.

American Express will give you 1% cash back on all your other qualifying purchases. So if you've got to spend a little extra this month and buy a new lawnmower that's going to set you back $500 – that's going to earn you an extra 5 Rewards Dollars you can put back towards your bill to pay for essentials like groceries and gas.

20 Reasons to Have the Blue Cash Everyday from American Express

1. No annual fee (See rates and fees)

When you get approved for the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, you don't have to pay an annual fee to American Express. This is a great feature to the card because of some cash back cards hefty annual fees.

By forgoing the annual fee, American Express allows their Blue Cash Everyday card users to focus on how they can put more money back in their pockets.

2. Uses a cash back system

The Blue Cash Everyday credit card uses a cash back system that gives you money to use towards your Blue Cash balance. You receive this cash back by spending money on your AmEx Blue Cash Everyday credit card on eligible purchases. T he total number of reward dollars you receive is based on a percentage of the dollar amount of your eligible purchases during each billing period.

You can then redeem your cash back in what American Express calls Reward Dollars in increments of 25. So for each billing cycle, you can use up to 25 Reward Dollars towards your balance. Nice!

3. Get 3% cash back on U.S. supermarket purchases

What's great about this card is that you're earning rewards for spending money on essentials – things you were going to buy anyway. So every time you go to the grocery store and buy your weekly bread and eggs, AmEx will give you 3% cash back on your total purchase (up to $6,000 per year in purchases, after that 1%).

That means if you go to an eligible supermarket tonight and spend $50 on groceries, you'll earn 1.5 Reward Dollars – just for buying things you need.

The numbers are even better if you're spending more, like if you've got a big family to buy for. So if you spend $200 for the week at the supermarket, that's 6 Rewards Dollars.

AmEx notes that this is not a complete list, and also says merchants, where you can NOT earn 3% on your purchase, include: convenience stores, specialty stores (like wine shops or fish markets) superstores, and warehouse clubs like Amazon, Target, Walmart, BJ's.

4. Earn 2% cash back on U.S. gas station purchases

Another awesome cash back feature on the American Express Blue Cash Everyday card is that you'll get 2% cash back when you make purchases at U.S. gas stations. That means every time you fill up at your local gas station, or while traveling the country, you're earning Rewards Points that can help fill up your next tank.

Let's do the math on this one: if it costs $45 to fill up your tank every week, you're going to earn nearly 4 Rewards Dollars a month. That's a great way to earn cash back for something you have to buy every week anyway – score!

It's important to note here that like the eligible supermarkets, you cannot earn additional rewards, in this case, 2% cash back, if the gas station is also a convenience store or part of a supermarket, warehouse club like Walmart or Sam's Club.

5. Get 2% cash back on certain U.S. department stores

OK, you can get rewarded for splurging a little bit with the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express too. While back to school clothes might be essential, those (stunning) new shoes might not be. Nonetheless, if you make purchases at any of the AmEx approved department stores you will get 2% cash back. And remember, all your purchases have to be made in the U.S. to qualify.

6. 1% cash back on everything else

Finally – if the rest of your purchases don't fall under the categories above, you can still earn cash back. American Express will give you 1% cash back on all your other qualifying purchases. So if you've got to splurge and buy a computer this month for $1,500 you're going to earn 15 Rewards Dollars. Pretty good for something you were going to buy anyway – and you can use those rewards to pay for other essentials you'll charge to the card, like groceries or gas.

7. Earn a bonus for Amazon

New cardholders can earn 20% back on Amazon.com purchases on the Card in the first 6 months of Card membership, up to $150 back. Plus, earn $100 back after you spend $2,000 in purchases on your new Card within the first 6 months of card membership. You will receive cash back in the form of statement credits.

That's a great bit of assurance if you're booking a trip and want to know you're getting the best deal possible. Just be sure to make the claim before the cancellation fee would be set in stone for the hotel you originally booked, and you should be good to get a refund from AmEx.

14. Return protection

Now, while the hotline is free – you will have to pay for any of the above services. But it's good to know that if something does go wrong with your card, you have someone to call and help you out anytime. That's a big relief, and a great feature.

16. Access to Shoprunner

Just a few of the stories included in Shoprunner include Ray-Ban, Saks Fifth Avenue, GNC, Calvin Klein, Bergdorf Goodman, and American Eagle Outfitters.

American Express will cover the expense charged to your account up to $1,000 per incident, and up to $50,000 per calendar year.

Bad things happen all the time – whether something is stolen or just breaks. So this is a great feature to have as Blue Cash Everyday card holder to protect your purchases from the unknown.

19. Fraud protection

If someone steals your credit card, or credit card information and uses it to purchase things you never authorized – American Express won't hold you responsible for those fraudulent charges. In fact, they'll work with you to resolve the issue – so no need to stress!

20. Extended warranty

American Express will give you access to extended warranties – for example, they'll add an additional year of warranty if the original manufacturer's warranty is between one year and five years. If the original manufacturer's warranty is less than a year – American Express will match it.

Redeeming your Rewards Dollars

After you've raked in your Rewards Dollars at 3%, 2% and 1% on your eligible purchases – it's time to put those dollars to good use.

Your Rewards Dollars will accrue to your account based on how much you spend in each category: eg. 3% on U.S. grocery store purchases. You can then use those Rewards Dollars in increments of 25 to pay off part of your monthly Blue Cash balance. That means the money you spent that month on essentials is going right back towards paying for other essentials – that's a great way to save you and your family some cash.

The Math Behind the Blue Cash Everyday from American Express

In order to fully understand the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, it's important to understand the number behind your cash rewards, Rewards Dollars, and welcome bonus. Here, we're going to break it all down for you, so it's easy to understand the earning and redemption potential of the Blue Cash card. Let's get started!

Numbers behind the Rewards Dollars: 3% cash back on U.S. supermarket purchases

That covers up to $6,000 in U.S. supermarket purchases, which totals 180 rewards dollars. That means after you spend $6,000 at a supermarket that year, you'll start earning just 1% on those purchases.

For a household that spends around a $100 a week on grocery store purchases, that's not much of a problem because the $6,000 limit will take them about a year to hit. But for a family that's spending more than that – like $200 a week on groceries – it'll take less than a year before they've hit the limit and their grocery store purchases get knocked down to 1%.

2% cash back on U.S. gas station purchases

When you make purchases at U.S. gas stations you'll earn 2% cash back. So, if it costs $45 to fill up your tank every week, you're going to earn nearly 4 Rewards Dollars a month.

And if you're commuting, or schlepping kids back and forth all day and spending closer to $100 a week on gas that means you're going to be earning 8 Rewards Dollars every month. Pretty good!

2% cash back at select U.S. department store purchases

When you make purchases at the approved department stores,  you'll get 2% cash back. That's great for both those essential purchases – like new shoes for the kids who are growing too fast, and new shoes just because you like them!

1% cash back on other purchases

If the rest of your purchases don't fall under the categories above, you can still earn cash back. American Express will give you 1% cash back on all your other qualifying purchases. So if you're buying a computer this month for $1,500, you're going to earn 15 Rewards Dollars. Pretty good for something you were going to buy anyway. You can use those rewards to pay for other essentials you'll charge to the card, like groceries or gas.

Summary

Yes, we already gave you 20 reasons to have the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, but we can't just leave it at that. We think that this is a great credit card to have if you're looking for a way to earn cash back rewards on your everyday purchases.

By providing customers with up to 3 percent cash back on purchases, this card is great for someone living on their own, or a family. We all buy groceries, and a large percentage of us have cars we need to fill up. For that reason, this is a great credit card for your everyday purchases.

But we also love how American Express allows their Blue Cash customers to earn more on other purchases too, like giving them 2 percent cash back on certain department store purchases and 1 percent on everything else eligible. That means you can still earn Rewards Dollars when you're not buying essentials. That sounds pretty great to us.

Additional Perks

On top of that, by having a Blue Cash Everyday card you get access to the awesome benefits provided by American Express. It's not all travel insurance and purchase protection either (which is great too). They also give you access to exclusive tickets to local entertainment, the lowest hotel rate guarantees, and access to their Shoprunner platform which amongst many things provides free 2-day shipping (enrollment required).

Overall, the math behind this card is great too. You don't have to spend an unreasonable amount of money to get the 25 Rewards Dollars a month you're allowed to put towards your bill. If you put a lot of your purchases on there a month, totaling up above $1,000, you're guaranteed to get a good amount of Rewards Dollars that you can put back towards your purchases. For that alone, we love this card.

All in all, the Blue Cash Everyday card gets 4 stars in our book for the rewards system, access to great benefits, and math that adds up to good deals.
